.BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept

Want proof that hybrids can be exciting? Just check out BMW’s new concept that will be debuting at the Frankfurt auto show. With a turbo-diesel engine, Lamborghini-like doors that pivot upwards, and extreme styling, this plug-in full hybrid BMW is one of the most, if not the most electrifying hybrid we’ve seen yet.
The Vision EfficientDynamics concept is loaded with technology that enables incredible performance and efficiency. It has one electric motor at each axel, powered by lithium-polymer batteries which can be recharged in just 2.5 hours when plugged into a 220-volt outlet. The 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 163 hp and 214 lb.-ft. or torque is combined with the electric motors to generate a total system output of 356 hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. With a relatively low curb weight of 3076 lb., the 6-speed twin-clutch gearbox launches the Vision EfficientDynamics concept from a standstill to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. While its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, the vehicle could easily exceed this. Its super aerodynamic body allows it an average fuel economy of 62.6 mpg.

Latest Cars to Roll Out in 2010 on Display in New Orleans

From shinny chrome to sleek designs, the latest model cars are on display this weekend in New Orleans.

What are you looking for in a car? If you're the Powell's, it's likely you're looking for space. "Pretty much the van side. Some thing that I can hold eight people to," says Ellisha. If you're her daughter Delta, you're looking for comfort. "Because I need to fit in my car with babies," the grammar school student says.

The 2010 International Auto Show showcasing the latest cars to roll out on dealer lots is this weekend. Jeffrie Schultis with GNO New Car Dealers Association says, "Everything is safety and technology."

From best sellers like the Honda Accord that you see on virtually every road in the city ... to the Synergy Green Chevy Camero, only in production until May, you'll get to see all kinds of different cars. Plus, you'll get to feel, touch and sit in them as well.

The most expensive car on the lot – a maroon Corvette -- priced at nearly $122,000 thousand dollars -- so valuable, we weren't allowed to open the door. It caught Jonathan Glawson's eye too. "So you want your dad to buy you a $122,000 thousand dollar car?" "Who wouldn't?" "But you're only 15. You have your permit. You're not concerned about wrecking that $122,000 thousand dollar car?" "No," says Jonathan.

Much less expensive with many top honors this year -- Ford, winning three Motor Trend awards. Lorenzo McDonald with Lamarque Ford says, "It's listening to the customers."

One eye catcher -- the many new, eclectic colors available to reflect your personality. There's blackberry pearl, vixen red to crimson black and this pink.

If you've got a list of criteria important to your family -- like the Powell's -- there are a lot of cars and a lot of choices to maneuver through.

The car show is at the Morial Convention Center through the weekend.

2010 Ford Saleen Mustang S281

www.roadandtrack.com
Legendary Mustang tuner Saleen has introduced yet another pumped-up version of Ford’s venerable pony car. The 2010 Ford Saleen Mustang S281 features a supercharged 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 485 horsepower, a bump of more than 150 horses over stock. The 281 refers to the engine’s displacement in cubic inches.

In addition to the more robust powerplant, the S281 features bodywork enhancements that include a new hood with a power dome/scoop that accommodates the supercharger, a revised grille, more aggressive front fascia and covers for the quarter windows. The S281 also features a sport-tuned suspension, beefed-up brakes and larger wheels and tires. Saleen says the upgrades are good for a 0–60 time of less than 6 seconds.

Mini Beachcomber Concept Catching eyes at 2010 Detroit Auto Show

Mini Beachcomber
Recently displayed at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, the Mini Beachcomber concept, marks the next step in Mini’s development of a compact SUV. The Beachcomber is a design update to Mini’s original Crossover concept, unveiled at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, which was the first exhibit of Mini’s ideas for an SUV. The beachcomber sits on top of the same chassis and suspension as the earlier concept, which should also serve as the bedrock of a future production vehicle. A vehicle that will feature ample ground clearance and suspension travel, if the Beachcomber is any indication. Just as an idea of how far off the Beachcomber is from transitioning to production, Mini has yet to say what engine or transmission will be under the hood. One thing we know is that Mini has coined the name ALL4 for the featured All-Wheel-Drive system.

Aesthetically, the Beachcomber looks a lot more up to the task of competing with the Wrangler than its predecessor. Unlike the Crossover concept, which had quite the set of doors, the Beachcomber, apparently inspired by the Mini Moke, has shed loose all doors, save for half a tailgate. Attached to the tailgate segment is not an external spare-tire cover, but an extra storage compartment that just so happens to resemble an external spare-tire cover. Squared-off headlights, a smaller grill with inset rally lights, and a muscular hood bulge combine for a tough look. The inclusion of four full-size neoprene racing-style seats puts cargo room at a premium, but the rear seatbacks do fold back for more room. The instrumentation includes a compass and an inclinometer for off-road forays as well as an artificial horizon gauge for no practical reason at all.

.The University of Ontario Institute of Technology creating EcoCAR

The EcoCAR Challenge is a student engineering competition that allows universities, automakers, government and advanced technology companies to collaborate with students across North America to create more fuel efficient vehicles. The EcoCAR competition aims to convert a Saturn Vue crossover vehicle into a very ecofriendly vehicle, with each competing school adding their own unique perspectives and inputs into their finished product. The University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology is designing their Eco Friendly Car based upon Full-Function Electric Vehicle architecture. The team anticipates their finished product to have a range of 400 plus KM without a recharge. To contact the team for more information on their project please click here.
